The English language is made up of 26 letters A-Z and just 44 different sounds. We call these "units" of sound that words are made of phonemes. The word dog is made up of the Phonemes /d/ /o/ /g/. These sounds can be represented by letters and combinations of letters. The letters that represent the sounds or the "Phonemes" (remember that word) are called Graphemes. Every word i have writen so far is made up of graphemes. The word cat is made up of the graphemes c and a and t. These Graphemes represent sound or a "Phoneme". Phonics teaches children to be able to identify and manipulate these sounds, and the letters that represent them.
